Private Room Catteries vs Communal

Private and communal are the two different types of cattery available. Many people are not aware of the difference between a private or a communal cattery, so we are writing to help clear up some confusion. We’ve put together a list of the main factors you’ll want to consider when deciding if a communal or private room cattery is right for you. Levin Boarding Cattery is a private room cattery.

Infection Risk

Giardia, coxidia, cat flu, fleas, and worms are all risk factors in a communal cattery. With a large amount of cats from different environments in one place, it can be impossible to guarantee that there will never be outbreaks of these infectious diseases and parasites that can cause lifelong issues in your pet. Even when we are careful and do the right things as owners, it is possible a disease could be incubating and not presenting symptoms initially. All it takes is one cat to infect the entire population of a communal cattery.
We believe private room catteries are the best way to prevent spread of infectious diseases or parasites - ideally with an air filtering system.

Stress

Staying in a different place without their owners is naturally a stressful thing on a cat. Cats are creatures of routine and habit - they like things to be the same every day. In a communal cattery, all the cats are strangers, and they are constantly changing who is there. At Levin Boarding Cattery, your cat will feel like it has its’ own space for the duration of their stay. We also use sound resistant lining to create even more privacy between neighboring bays.

Health Checks

In a communal cattery situation with a large open space, it can be difficult or impossible at times to accurately check on every cat. At Levin Boarding Cattery your cat is personally checked multiple times a day, with notes assigned to the room they are staying in so there is no chance of mixing them up with another cat or missing any signs of discomfort.

Cat Fights

Need we say more? In addition to vet bills, and pain for your cat, cat fights can transmit bloodborne diseases such as feline HIV. Definitely not something you want to bring home from a cattery stay.

Cost

Communal catteries do have the advantage of costing less, for obvious reasons, than a private room cattery. On average it will always be cheaper to put a lot of cats in one room, rather than divide the room into private spaces which means less cats, more construction cost, and less profit.

This is not to say that every private cattery costs more than every communal cattery. We have certainly seen some communal catteries charging very high prices.

At Levin Boarding Cattery we run a low cost business model, and we aren’t trying to be the most profitable cattery in town - we are trying to be the best. Levin Boarding Cattery offers private room boarding at relatively affordable rates.

Private Room vs Communal

It should be no surprise - we think that private room catteries are the best option wherever it is possible to use one. But we do understand sometimes we don’t have a choice with our budgets.
We want there to be more high quality catteries like us, so this was a big part of what motivated us to build Levin Boarding Cattery.
